Complete Diagnostic Care

Our diagnostic services are an important tool for your pet’s overall well being and care. Because your cat or dog cannot tell us how they feel or where they are hurting, our team relies on our top of the line diagnostic tools and procedures to assess your pets unique needs and create an accurate health assessment. We offer an in-house laboratory and state of the art imaging. If your pet’s diagnostic results reveal potential concerns, we will take the time to discuss your pet’s condition and answer your questions.

In-House Blood Work

Common Blood Work Tests

Our in-house lab will handle the majority of your pet’s needs, whether your cat or dog requires testing for a specific illness because they are presenting symptoms or if they are having blood work as part of their regular wellness exam. When your pet requires blood work, there are several common tests we routinely do for both cats and dogs that check for common illnesses, abnormal organ levels, and elevated or decreased blood counts. Depending on the age of your pet and general health we may also suggest more advanced tests that are cat or dog specific.

Complete Blood Counts (CBCs)

Complete Blood Cell Counts look at the red cells and white cells in your pets body. Testing for these can indicate problems like anemia, infections, leukemia and other diseases. A high white blood cell count in your cat or dog can indicate an infection. This test is done during standard blood work and typically takes less than 10 minutes for results. If more advanced testing is required and must be sent out, we will have results within 24 hours.

Serum Chemistries

This common blood test is to check organ function such as the liver, kidneys, and more extensive panels. Your pet’s serum chemistries will test for kidney failure, liver disease, some cancers, and diabetes. These can be run as preventative care to develop a baseline and may be included in a senior care routine for cats or dogs over the age of seven.

Electrolyte Levels

If your pet has experiences shock or a blood loss situation, an electrolyte test can help determine the immediate therapy necessary to treat your pet. This test is common in situations like car accidents or severe trauma.

Heartworm Detection

Detecting the presence of heartworms in your pet is vital to their survival. Along with regular heartworm medication, blood testing for the presence of heartworm proteins is usually done during your pet’s wellness exam. We highly recommend this test for both cat’s and dogs.

Thyroid Testing

This testing is common during a wellness exam or if your pet is experiencing issues common with thyroid disorders. In both dogs and cats, there has to be a period of time between when your pet takes their thyroid medication, and when they are tested. This is a unique time constraint not necessary in humans, but necessary for both cats and dogs.

Cat Specific Blood Tests

To ensure your feline is as healthy as possible, we commonly check for cat specific illnesses during their wellness exam.

Chronic Kidney Disease

If your cat is aging, we may run blood work to test for CKD. If our team determines your cat may have Chronic Kidney Disease, we may require more advanced blood work for a proper diagnosis.

Feline Leukemia & Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

This common test is done generally with new cats and kittens with unknown backgrounds. These viruses are life-threatening and contagious to other felines.

Dog Specific Blood Tests

Keeping your dog healthy is our priority. During your dog’s wellness exam, there are common dog specific illnesses we check for.

Lyme, Anaplasmosis & Ehrlichiosis

These diseases are tick borne diseases. They should be tested for during your wellness exam or if your pet frequents the outdoors and common tick environments.

Kidney and Liver Disease

Testing for kidney and liver disorders or disease can be life saving. Both organs are vital in your pet’s life. These tests are done as part of your wellness checkup or after a pet displays troubling symptoms.

Digital Imaging

Imaging at Pittsfield Vet Clinic At Pittsfield Veterinary Clinic we consider the use of imaging a critical tool in keeping your pets healthy. Our highly trained staff use imaging to evaluate injuries and conditions which require more than a basic examination. By using X-Rays, we have a less invasive way to observe your pet’s internal health, providing a more thorough and accurate diagnosis. Our imaging is frequently used to detect bone fractures, dental issues, bladder stones, tumors, soft tissue problems (those related to the heart, stomach, intestines, reproductive, and urinary systems) as well as to locate swallowed foreign objects like toys or rocks.
